Your Purpose Statement should define your purpose as well as your values in a way that is not tethered to your job / company. This statement defines your purpose. It should be emotional and define your core values, and how you apply them to your life and your mission. It's what you ultimately want to achieve in your life or career, expressed in a specific, measurable way.
Use this worksheet to guide you towards crafting one specific to you.
Drafting Your Purpose Statement
- Identify what you do best — Create a list of your unique strengths. These will likely point to what you would like to do most with your life and career.
- Think about what success means to you — What does success look like? If you get stuck, make a list of past accomplishments that really made you feel as if you did something worthwhile. Your aim is to create a short list of identifiers / measures that will help you identify and track your progress.
- Identify your personal goals — Take the time to explore what you might want to do with your life and career, and then narrow down to the goals you most want to pursue, across the full range of life areas.
- Combine the first three steps — Look at your goals, your unique strengths and your idea of success, and then identify the connection(s) between them. Summarize and document clear statements that illustrate connections.
- Craft it into a truth — Take what you have and craft it into a statement that is as powerful and motivating as possible. Craft the statement in a way that it reflects you and your personality and way of being.
- Keep refining — Edit and perfect the words until you have a clear, concise statement that identifies your personal and professional goals in a way that is meaningful and timely. This can be your North Star.
